What to see and where to go in Nessebar?

The most interesting and beautiful places for walking. Photos and a short description.

Old city

The old quarters of the city are located on a small peninsula connected to the new part of Nessebar by a bridge. In the 10th century BC, the first Thracian colony was founded here. Then the Romans, Byzantines and Turks ruled on the territory of Bulgaria. The best preserved buildings in the Old Town are buildings with foundations built in the Ottoman period, as well as structures of the 18th century.

Windmill

The mill is located on the isthmus connecting the Old Town and the modern part of Nessebar. The structure itself is made of wood and fortified on a stone foundation left over from a Byzantine church. The mill is considered a symbol of the city; tourists often come here during walks. It consists of three floors: flour was stored on the first, the miller's family lived on the second, and the millstones were on the third.

Western fortress wall

The Western Wall is all that remains of the city's once powerful defensive system. A small section of fortification stretches for about 100 meters; the structure reaches 8 meters in height. The surrounding area is refined and well-groomed, so it is pleasant to walk here and enjoy the view of the surroundings. It is believed that the wall was erected during the Early Middle Ages and was restored several times.

Churches of Nessebar

Nessebar is famous for its temples, erected in different historical periods. Among others, the Church of St. Paraskeva of the 12th century, the dilapidated Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel - a UNESCO site, the Church of St. Stephen, built in the 11th century, and the Church of Christ Pantokrator - one of the most famous and well-preserved city temples of the Middle Ages, can be noted. ...

Archaeological Museum

The Archeology Museum is located at the entrance to the Old Town. It opened in 1994. The impressive exhibition spans four floors and consists of items from the Thracian, Roman and Byzantine historical periods. Here, visitors will be able to view collections of icons, dishes, jewelry, coins, ship accessories, as well as statues (or rather what is left of them) and ancient burial slabs.

Ethnographical museum

The exposition is housed in a 19th century city manor, previously owned by a wealthy merchant. Each room in the house is dedicated to a different theme. Furniture, household items, craftsmen's tools, household utensils, clothes, textiles and many more interesting exhibits related to the life and culture of local residents are exhibited here. On the street in front of the museum during the holidays, folklore ensembles often perform.
