History and description

In ancient Yaroslavl, there are many monuments, they are all different, and the residents of the city treat them differently. However, there is such a monument that Yaroslavl people immediately liked, and it was built quite recently. The new monument was inaugurated on the day of the city, in 2013. It is a black cast-iron column placed on a beautiful granite base. The column contains signs pointing to all eight cities of the “Golden Ring” of Russia, indicating their names and distances to each city.

Metal bas-reliefs with a symbolic map of the Golden Ring and words from the decree of Emperor Nicholas II issued in 1912 in memory of the merits of Yaroslavl during the formation of the people's militia in 1612 are fixed on the faceted base of the monument. In this decree, he allowed the townspeople on May 24 to have a "non-partisan" day, that is, a day off. Today this date is celebrated as the day of the city. In addition, on the pedestal there are tablets with the words from the song about Yaroslavl and the coat of arms of this ancient city. At the base of the monument are the coats of arms of all ancient Russian cities, through which the tourist routes of the "Golden Ring" are laid. A little further off, beautiful semicircular benches are installed, which also bear the coats of arms of all eight cities.

Interestingly, the column itself was made in the first half of the 19th century. It was discovered during restoration work in one of the old houses, which once belonged to the rich Yaroslavl merchants Vakhromeev.

The green square near the memorial sign quickly became popular among the townspeople and guests of Yaroslavl, and today tourists who travel along the “Golden Ring” of Russia like to take pictures at this monument.
