On the side of the entrance to Uglich from Yaroslavl, there is a small temple that reminds of the ancient monastery of St. Macarius the Egyptian. Believers come to this church to pray to the miraculous icon of the Korsun Mother of God. Lovers of temple architecture and history are attracted by the beautiful forms and the high elegant bell tower.

Temple history

In the 13th century, the ruler of Uglich, Prince Roman Vladimirovich, founded an Orthodox monastery on the steep bank of the Selivanovsky stream. The new monastery above the earthen rampart, at the eastern border of the posad, was named after Saint Macarius the Egyptian. She served to protect Uglich and played the role of the spiritual center of the city.

In the hard times of Troubles, the monastery shared the sad fate of all Uglich shrines. The Poles captured and burned the monastery. The destruction was so severe that it was decided not to restore the monastery buildings. In the ashes, residents of the city found the main temple image - an intact icon of the Korsun Mother of God.

In memory of the devastated monastery in Uglich, a wooden tent-roofed Church of the Intercession with the chapel of Macarius of Egypt was built. The stone temple in honor of the miraculous icon appeared in 1730, when the earthen rampart was gone.

During the years of Soviet power in Uglich, as well as throughout the country, an active struggle was waged against religion. When the old church was closed in 1941, only one active church remained in the city - Tsarevich Dimitri "on the field"... The building of the former church housed warehouses of various organizations, and since 1989 - a sports school.

In 1994, the Church of the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God was restored and handed over to the community of believers. Unfortunately, during the long years of inactivity, all the church interiors were lost.

Architectural features

The beautiful Uglich church combines the elegant Naryshkinsky Baroque style with the traditions of wooden temple architecture. The main part, the refectory and the bell tower are on the same line - "the ship". A graceful five-domed on thin drums stands on a massive four-piece and gives the church an extraordinary lightness and upward aspiration.

The White Temple has bright red lace trim, blue domes and a green roof. The multicolored splendor is crowned with gilded crosses visible from afar. The picturesque building effectively stands out among the typical low-rise buildings and trees.

“Lovers of Russian architecture, who travel to the cities of the“ Golden Ring ”of Russia, come to admire the paired arches of the architraves, the ornament on the facades and the pylons at the corners of the temple. A particularly beautiful view of the church opens from the side of the city Palace of Culture.

The octagonal bell tower, which was built in the image of its contemporary, the famous bell tower of the Uglich Kremlin, deserves special attention. The slender tower stands out among the cathedrals and temples of Uglich and resembles a tall candle.
