The slender small one-domed Tikhvin Church forms a single architectural ensemble with the Church of St. Nicholas the Mokroi. And they were built at the same time - at the end of the 17th century on the territory that at that time belonged to the Spassky Monastery. The richly decorated southern vestibule of the church, made in the tradition of the "Russian pattern", attracts great attention of pilgrims and tourists from all over Russia.

History of the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God

A warm temple dedicated to the appearance of the icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God was erected in 1686 on the south side of the cold church of St. Nicholas the Mokry, which had already been built six years earlier. It is known that both of these temples were preceded by wooden churches that stood on the territory of the Spasskaya Sloboda of Yaroslavl long before that. The merchants of the Yaroslavl living room of a hundred Klim and Semyon Luzin became the sponsors of the construction, that is, benefactors who allocated money for the construction of the new church.

The task of the architects and builders was to create a harmonious, beautiful architectural ensemble of the two temples. And, I must say, with this they are quite right. The warm church was made similar in proportions, but in some elements different from the cold church. It turned out to be small in size, exactly what it is convenient to heat in the cold season. Eight years after the construction, in the Tikhvin Church, a side-altar dedicated to St. Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea, was consecrated.

During the Soviet era, in 1929, this church was closed, and the premises were used as a warehouse. In the last years before being handed over to the parish community (1992), the church was generally abandoned, and the building was in disrepair. The ceiling collapsed almost over the entire area. And the specialists-restorers, headed by Andrei Vyacheslavovich Rzhevsky, had to perform very difficult engineering work to straighten the tilted church head. It was possible to re-consecrate the temple only after many years of careful restoration - in 2006.

Architecture and interior decoration of the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God

The Tikhvin Church is a low one-domed church. Its distinctive feature is that it does not have an apseous altar ledge, that is, its eastern wall is straight. On a square apse, on a small pedestal, the so-called "tribune", there is a small decorative dome covered with colored scaly tiles. And on the roof there is a slender two-tiered drum. In addition, this temple has a long, squat refectory and porch.

The porch topped with a tent was added to the church in the 1890s. Like the neighboring church of St. Nicholas the Mokry, the narthex of the church is richly decorated with glazed multicolored ceramics. But in the Tikhvin Church the ceramic tiles are better preserved. Not a single Yaroslavl temple has such magnificent decorations today. Bright, colored tiles cover its walls from top to bottom, like a real carpet. The tent of the Tikhvin vestibule is also covered with glazed tiles.

The current state of the temple and the visiting regime

The Tikhvin Church is an active Orthodox church belonging to the Nikolo-Mokrinsky parish. There are two altars here. The main altar is consecrated in honor of the Mother of God, and the altar of the small altar is in honor of St. Basil of Caesarea.

Services are held on Sundays and public holidays. The sculpture of St. Nil of Stolobensky and the myrrh-streaming image of St. Sergius of Radonezh are considered especially revered shrines of this temple.
