The very first museums in Nizhny Novgorod opened at the end of the 19th century and therefore can be classified as one of the oldest in Russia. Most of the museum collections are housed in old buildings that have the status of historical and architectural monuments. These are former merchant houses, estates and even defensive fortifications - the perfectly preserved Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.

Art Museum

The Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum is located in the building of the former Governor's Palace

One of the oldest museums in the city has such a rich collection that it exhibits it in two places at once. In the Kremlin, in the building of the former Governor's Palace, visitors will find a large collection of works by Russian artists of the XIV-XX centuries. At the beginning of the last century, individual painters and the Russian Academy of Arts donated many paintings and graphic works to the Nizhny Novgorod museum.

In the building on the Verkhnevolzhskaya embankment, one can get acquainted with the works of Western European artists who worked in the 15th-20th centuries. This collection began to take shape in the 1920s, thanks to private donations. In addition, the museum funds were significantly replenished after the nationalization of private galleries, which were previously located in the noble estates. Before the start of the Great Patriotic War, several paintings to Nizhny Novgorod were donated by the country's largest art museums - the Museum of Arts named after V.I. Pushkin in Moscow and the Hermitage. In addition to paintings, the halls display engravings, majolica, sculptures and bronze works.
