While traveling along the "Golden Ring" of Russia, tourists visit Orthodox monasteries and admire ancient temples. The first monasteries in the city appeared simultaneously with the construction the Kremlin - in the middle of the X century. The locals were devout, and before the revolution there were several monastic communities in Uglich. After the persecution of the Church, which was carried out under Soviet rule, three monasteries were revived. Another one is located near the city.

The convent was founded in 1371 by the monk Adrian at the direction of Metropolitan Alexy and with the approval of Prince Dmitry Donskoy. In the difficult Time of Troubles, all the monastery buildings were burned down, and the defenders of the monastery were buried alive in its basements. In the 20s of the 17th century, the monastery was restored.

The main treasure of the Alekseevsky Monastery - the Assumption Church is so good that it is called "Wonderful". A unique three-hipped building has been in the monastery since 1628.

The Church of John the Baptist was built in 1681. The church is famous for its beautiful glazed tiles and paintings.

The history of the Alekseevsky temple dates back to the 16th century. The slender building has the correct proportions, so art critics believe that the church could have been built by Rostov architects or Italian masters from Moscow.

Another ancient abode of Uglich appeared thanks to the wife of Dmitry Donskoy - Princess Evdokia. The monastery flourished in the second half of the 16th century, when the last wife of the Russian Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible and the mother of his heir, Maria Nagaya, lived in the city.

After the death of the young Tsarevich, Mary was imprisoned in the Epiphany Monastery, so the monastery was called "the empress's pilgrimage." Naked took tonsure, was given a new name - Martha and went to another monastery in the Cherepovets province.

The date of foundation of one of the oldest monasteries in Uglich is not known exactly. Perhaps it appeared during the reign of Prince Roman of Uglichsky - in the XIII century.

In 1609, when the monastery was still wooden, Poles besieged it. The troops under the command of Jan Sapieha destroyed all buildings, killed the monks and about 500 lay people who defended the city. In the 17th century, after the Time of Troubles, the monastery was moved to another place, not far from the Kremlin, and rebuilt in stone.

The unique architectural ensemble is not like other cathedrals and temples of Uglich. The Resurrection Cathedral, the small church of Odigitria, the refectory and the belfry are connected by a covered gallery, so the monastery looks like a fairytale castle. Outside, the buildings are decorated with glazed tiles, and inside - with wall paintings made by Kostroma artists.
