In Central Russia, Ivanovo is rightfully considered one of the oldest cultural centers. About a dozen museums have been created in this city, many of which have no analogues not only in our country, but throughout the world. For example, the chintz museum, presenting unique collections of Ivanovo manufactories and factories, dating back to the 17th century. At the end of the 19th century, the famous industrialist and collector Dmitry Gennadievich Burylin began to collect rare museum exhibits at the end of the 19th century. Today the rich Ivanovo collections are considered one of the best in the Russian province.

The main building, erected at the beginning of the last century, houses the expositions of the city museum of industry and art. Here you can get acquainted with the old collections that belonged to D.G. Burylin: objects from the interiors that belonged to Ivanovo-Voznesensk industrialists, works of decorative and applied art and marble sculptures. In the hall dedicated to the nature of the region, stuffed animals and birds living in the Ivanovo region are exhibited. In addition, valuable items of church worship, rare coins, ancient weapons and a large library of books collected by D.G. Burylin.

In addition to the main building, the local history museum owns several branches located in the central part of the city. This is its own museum and exhibition center, the house-museum of the Bubnov family, as well as museums dedicated to Ivanovo chintz and the first Soviet. The unique textile collection, which includes about 0.5 million exhibits, can be seen only in Ivanovo. The building itself, which houses this unusual museum, is also attractive. It was built in the Art Nouveau style for the famous collector D.G. Burylin by the project of Ivanovo-Voznesensk architect Alexander Fedorovich Snurilov at the beginning of the last century.

There are so many calicoes in this museum! The halls are full of fabrics with the most intricate patterns. In addition, there are samples of folk costumes - shirts, sundresses and panes, and the guides talk about how the weaving and printed craft developed in the Ivanovo region. Several years ago, the museum opened an exposition telling about the life and work of the famous Russian fashion designer Vyacheslav Zaitsev, whose childhood and youth are associated with Ivanovo.

House-Museum of the Bubnov family

A residential building with a mezzanine, which was once part of the city's estate, was built in 1860. According to the traditions of late classicism, the decor of this building is very modest and laconic. In the second half of the 19th century, there were many similar houses in the city, but only one has survived to this day.

The museum exposition is dedicated to the history of the Bubnov family - the indigenous inhabitants of Ivanovo-Voznesensk. Several generations of this family grew up within the walls of the old house. A separate section of the museum tells about Andrei Sergeevich Bubnov, who since 1929 worked as People's Commissar of Education of the RSFSR. He died in 1938 during the Stalinist repressions and was posthumously rehabilitated. Traveling around the house, you can feel what the everyday life of the townspeople consisted of in the late 19th - early 20th centuries.

Regional Art Museum

Lovers of fine art will surely like the art collection presented in Ivanovo. It is housed in a brick building erected in 1866 for the city real school - a real architectural monument.

The art collection, numbering 45 thousand exhibits, was originally collected by D.I. Burylin, and later replenished with gifts from abroad, the funds of the Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery. Here you can see ancient Egyptian mummies and sarcophagi, vessels and mosaics of Ancient Rome, as well as works of art from the countries of the East. Large sections of the museum are devoted to Western European art, starting from the 16th century, as well as icon painting, engraving, sculpture and printing of Ancient Rus.

And one of the largest expositions covers Russian art, starting from the 18th century. and ending with the beginning of the last century. Art lovers will be happy to see the original works of Vasily Polenov, Pyotr Konchalovsky, Ilya Mashkov, Karl Bryullov, Ivan Borovikovsky and Vasily Tropinin.

The building in which the museum is located has the status of an architectural monument and previously belonged to the Meshchanskaya council, one of the administrative centers of Ivanovo. This one-storey brick house was built in 1904. The museum is interesting for its richest collections of rare photographs, which reflect the history of the city over the past two centuries. In addition, the museum has recreated the interiors of the Meshchansky Council, whose members solved pressing issues of city life, and held Christmas trees and other holidays for children.

Military Transport Aviation Museum

Few people know that Ivanovo is home to one of the country's largest bases for the deployment of military transport aircraft. An unusual museum was opened on the basis of the Ivanovo air garrison in the mid-1980s. The museum building is notable for the fact that it was here that the famous Normandie-Niemen fighter squadron was formed here during the Second World War.

In the museum halls you can see old photographs, models of famous aircraft, airborne radio stations, sights and guns, airfield models, dashboards, as well as maps used by pilots in the past.

There are real planes that have played an important role in the history of Russian aviation: the military aircraft LI-2, the biplane AN-2TD, the wide-body monoplane AN-22A, the military transport aircraft AN-26. The private museum collection was opened in 2014 and presents carefully restored domestically produced cars. For five years, they were collected all over the country by the collector-enthusiast Boris Vlasov. Among the 26 models of mass-produced cars, there are also original copies. For example, the car that took part in the filming of the film "Maxim Perepelitsa". It is noteworthy that all the cars of the Ivanovo collection are kept in working order, and the quality of their restoration is highly appreciated by professionals.

Fans of painting and graphics, coming to Ivanovo, certainly make an excursion to the memorial museum of the artist Alexander Ivanovich Morozov. The house where the collection is located was built at the beginning of the last century. Here are collected paintings and graphic works of the master, his photo archive and personal belongings. In addition, here you can see musical instruments, sculptures, as well as video films about the life of the People's Artist of Russia.

In the middle of the 19th century, a large picturesque Baroque building appeared in the city. The famous Russian architect Konstantin Andreevich Tona built it for the wealthy Ivanovo-Voznesensk industrialist Nikolai Fedorovich Zubkov. In 1918-1919, the services of the military commissariat were quartered here. Yaroslavl, whose head in those years was M.V. Frunze. Later, infantry courses were located in the former manor house. A commemorative exposition dedicated to the Soviet military leader was opened on the second floor of the house in 1962.
