Tourists who travel to the cities of the "Golden Ring" of Russia love to visit Uglich. The city on the Volga has an interesting history and keeps many monuments of temple architecture. Uglich churches carry architectural traditions of different eras. Many of them are decorated with beautiful glazed tiles. Inside you can see the carved iconostases and murals, which were made by talented craftsmen from Rostov, Moscow and Kostroma.

Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist

Antique five-headed Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist considered the most beautiful in the city. Travelers who come to Uglich by the river cannot take their eyes off it. It seems that a slender building on the basement is hovering above the ground. The golden walls are decorated with colorful tiles, and the bell tower is decorated with exquisite stucco moldings.

Three chapels have been consecrated in the current church. Divine services are rarely held here, so tourists cannot get inside and admire only the patterned facades.

Transfiguration Cathedral in the Uglich Kremlin

The central place in the architectural ensemble of the Kremlin is occupied by the cathedral of the local diocese. Transfiguration Cathedral has a long history. The very first church on the Volga bank stood from the second half of the 15th century. The building, which has survived to this day, was built in the 1710s by the serfs of Prince Golitsyn and the architect Grigory Fedorov in the traditions of the Yaroslavl school and the "Naryshkin" baroque.

Architecture lovers come to Uglich Kremlinto enjoy the simple form and monumentality of the Transfiguration Cathedral. Inside there is a spacious hall for worshipers 14 m by 14 m and a magnificent six-tiered iconostasis.

Not far from the five-domed church there is an elongated building with white and yellow tones, made in the tradition of classicism. The Epiphany Church was a winter temple. Services were held here in the cold season, when the summer cathedral was closed. Now in the spacious church, paintings and applied art of the 17th-19th centuries are exhibited, and temporary exhibitions are held.

From the south of the Transfiguration Cathedral rises a slender bell tower, which is clearly visible from the Volga and from the outskirts of the city. The 37 m high tower was erected in 1730. The first clock mechanism was installed in the bell tower in the 19th century, and in the 1980s it was replaced with a new one.

Temples in memory of the death of the king's son

Uglich went down in history as the place where the youngest son of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible and Maria Nagoya died. After the death of the sovereign, the eight-year-old prince with his mother, her relatives and retinue was sent to Uglich.

Once Dimitri was playing in the yard with two of the same young children. According to one of the versions, the child had an epileptic seizure, in convulsions he stabbed himself in the throat and died. According to another version, the tsarevich was stabbed to death by ill-wishers. The bloody drama became the subject of legal proceedings and led to the deaths of many innocent people.

In memory of the tragic event, two churches were built in the city. Church of Tsarevich Demetrius on the Blood is considered a real pearl of Uglich. A wonderful temple-ship appeared on the banks of the Volga at the end of the 17th century. Before him, a wooden church and a chapel stood at the site of the death of the tsar's son. The famous "exile" bell is installed inside the building.

Where the farewell of the townspeople took place with the body of the prince, rises Church of Tsarevich Dimitri "on the field"... Despite the fact that the five-domed temple is located away from the main attractions of Uglich, it is popular with tourists.

The building is distinguished by graceful lines and harmonious proportions. The church has preserved the paintings of 1836, similar to the frescoes of the Transfiguration Cathedral. Most likely, the same team of painters worked in both churches.

Church of the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God

Churches dedicated to revered icons have long been built in Russian cities and villages. Uglich is no exception. Small Church of the Icon of the Mother of God of Korsun located at the entrance to the city from Yaroslavl. A stone temple in honor of the miraculous image appeared in Uglich in 1730.

The picturesque church combines the traditions of Russian wooden architecture and the magnificent "Naryshkin" baroque. A graceful five-headed head on thin drums completes a massive four-piece, and this gives the building a lightness and upward aspiration.

Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God located to the west of the Kremlin. Once upon a time there was a noisy shopping area. In the 1780s, Archbishop Samuel built a baroque temple near the shopping arcade. There is a bell tower nearby. Perhaps this is the tallest church building in Uglich, so it can be clearly seen from different parts of the city.

On the right bank of the Volga, where the princely stables used to be, stands Church of Flora and Lavra, patron saints of horses. In the Middle Ages, one could walk past the temple along Konyushennaya Street to the eastern Florovskiye Gates of the Uglich Kremlin.

The building, which has survived to this day, appeared in 1762. The high three-height church was built in the best traditions of Uchlich architecture. Small domes rise on slender drums, and the windows of the temple are decorated with baroque platbands.
