This museum collection is the largest in Kostroma. It has been collected for many decades and today is exhibited in several branches. In the halls of the Nobility Assembly (the main building of the museum at Prospect Mira, 7), you can see exhibits telling about the history of the provincial nobility. In the nearby Romanov Museum (Prospect Mira, 5), there are objects of boyar life - ancient weapons, documents and books, as well as works of Russian art. The building of the guardhouse was given for a military-historical theme (1/2 Lenin street). Here are presented rich collections of weapons from different countries and eras.

For those who decide to come to Kostroma, the museum staff will organize interesting trips around the city quarters. In addition, you can visit the museum on unusual theatrical excursions that allow you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a provincial town of the 19th century. On the bank of the small river Igumenka, very close to the Ipatiev Monastery, there is an amazing collection - old residential huts, chopped baths, chapels and temples. An unusual open-air museum began to be created in 1958. The surviving ancient monuments of wooden architecture were brought to the city from all over the region. The Church of the Cathedral of the Virgin, brought here from the village of Kholm, located in the Galich region, was cut down in the middle of the 16th century. It is interesting to go inside the wooden buildings and see with your own eyes how the life of a peasant family was arranged. And in one of the huts, an entertaining museum of Russian drink has been open for more than 5 years.

Collections about the flora and fauna of the Kostroma region are housed in a two-story mansion built in the 19th century. It was once part of a large shopping complex and was intended for a teahouse owned by the local sobriety society. Interestingly, the permanent museum exhibitions are made in the form of colorful and detailed dioramas, where you can see what a typical Kostroma spring looks like, the first winter period and the middle of winter. The museum displays stuffed animals and birds living in the Kostroma forests, a rich collection of insects collected by I.M. Rubinsky, as well as the fossilized remains of the local fossil fauna.

Therefore, in October 2013, it was decided to open a special museum in the city. The private collection is located not far from Gostiny Dvor in a historic building built in the last third of the 18th century.

Here you can learn about the traditions of the Kostroma jewelry art, which originates in the Middle Ages, see unique products of the 17th-19th centuries, as well as the works of modern master jewelers. The exposition also displays mechanical tools for processing metal and stone, which were used by rural artisans who were engaged in jewelry production.

In Kostroma, there are two places at once dedicated to the beloved fairy-tale heroine - the Snegurochka's tower and a special museum, which is located in a historical building - an architectural monument of the 19th century. The museum collection introduces the customs and traditional beliefs of the peoples who have long inhabited the Kostroma lands. Russian folk costumes from different parts of the country are presented on 150 dummy dolls. This unique collection was created over several decades by the talented artist Margarita Efimovna Artamonova. No less impressive is the unique collection of ritual and amulet dolls that children used to love to play with. Museum visitors are always satisfied, because it is not forbidden to touch any exhibits here.

You might think that the fabulous dwelling of Santa Claus's assistant, Snegurochka, is open only in winter. But this is not the case! You can get to the beautiful chopped Kostroma tower all year round. The hostess herself, the Snow Maiden, meets the guests, as well as her assistants - the cat Bayun and the Brownie with Domovikha. With fairy-tale heroes, you can make a fascinating journey to the origins of folk myths, visit beautiful Russian rooms and a spacious courtyard, play and listen to fairy tales. It is interesting that all year round, even in the hottest summer, the Ice Room remains in the tower, the temperature in which does not rise above -14? C. All items in it are carved out of ice. And here guests are treated to drinks traditional in Russia from unusual ice glasses.

In the hall of birch bark, technologies for the production of traditional birch bark products and samples collected during ethnographic expeditions are presented - baskets, dishes and funny toys.In the museum, it is interesting to try to make a birch bark handicraft on your own, and you can also buy a souvenir you like.

Museum of theatrical costume

One of the youngest museums in the city is located in the house where Fyodor Grigorievich Volkov, the founder of the Russian national theater, spent his childhood. This is a residential building built in the first half of the 18th century in the Baroque style. The collection presented here is dedicated to theatrical performances based on the plays of the Russian writer-playwright A.N. Ostrovsky, whose name is the city theater. And the main section tells about the famous play "Snow Maiden". The oldest of the museum's theatrical costumes was made in the 60s of the XX century.

In the old part of the city, occupied by the Ipatievskaya Sloboda, there is a two-story brick house, which at the beginning of the 20th century belonged to Mikhail Mikhailovich Malyshev. He was born in 1868 and worked in adulthood as a caretaker at the city's linen manufactory. In 1915, Malyshev was awarded the title of an honorary citizen of the Volga city.

The creators of the museum tried to show through the history of a private house what the Kostroma province looked like at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum exposition contains many rare photographs, collections of antique sewing machines, tailor's scissors, a wide variety of keys, coal and steam irons, household dishes and furniture. Here you can see silk and linen clothes, as well as take part in a master class on the art of embroidery on fabric.
